A Dremel polishes a single rock in an afternoon, where a tumbler needs weeks, and it can work flat faces, carved shapes and stones too large or too fragile for a barrel. The process copies tumbling grit steps: a coarse diamond burr or 50 to 100 grit pad shapes and removes pits, then you step up through 200, 400, 800, 1500 and 3000 before a final polish with felt and compound. Diamond is the abrasive that matters on stone harder than about Mohs 6, since plain sandpaper and the aluminum oxide stones in general kits wear out fast on quartz and agate. Work wet with a drip or spray bottle, keep the speed low for pads and felt (heat causes fractures and glazed pads), and wear a respirator: rock dust is often silica.
