Best rock tumblers and grit for making sea glass
Picked from Amazon listings, not hands-on tests. How we pick
Making sea glass in a rock tumbler is a short job: broken glass, coarse grit (step 1, 60/90) and water, tumbled for a few days to about a week, with no polish step, because sea glass is meant to stay matte. So the machine matters more than the polish kit. Glass is softer than quartz and chips easily, which is why a rubber barrel, a load that fills the barrel to about two thirds, and some cushioning media help. Barrels can build up gas pressure with glass, so open the lid carefully, pointed away from you, and wear eye protection and gloves when breaking glass. The picks differ in barrel capacity, barrel material, timer and speed settings, and what is in the box. A timer with automatic shutoff suits runs of a few days. This guide compares six tumblers from 1 lb to 4 lb by what their Amazon listings state. The kits here hold one bag of coarse grit at most, so for repeat batches plan on a separate jar of coarse silicon carbide grit. None of these machines was tested for this page.

The picks in detail

Pick 1 · KomeStone
KomeStone K1 quiet tumbler kit, 2.5 lb barrel
See price on AmazonA 2.5 lb rubber-barrel kit whose listing names sea glass among the materials it processes. Ceramic media in the box helps cushion glass, and pause and resume make it easy to check a load.
What the listing offers
- Listing names sea glass alongside agates, jasper and quartz as material for the 2.5 lb rubber barrel.
- 3 speed settings and an adjustable 9-day digital timer on an LCD screen, with pause and resume to check the load.
- Kit includes ceramic tumbling media and four bags of grit (60/120/150/1200); the 60 grit bag is the coarse step used for frosting glass.
Limits to know
- Only one bag of coarse grit is included, so repeat batches of glass need a separate coarse grit refill.
- The 1 lb of rough rocks and the polish bag in the kit are not needed for matte sea glass.

Pick 2 · KomeStone
KomeStone K2 covered tumbler kit, 3 lb barrel
See price on AmazonA 3 lb single-barrel kit with a brushless motor and a noise-reduction cover that closes over the barrel. Suits adults who will run it indoors and want rough, grit and a spare belt in the box.
What the listing offers
- 3 lb soft rubber barrel under a noise-reduction cover that also keeps hands away from the rotating barrel.
- 3 selectable speeds and a 9-day programmable timer that shuts off when the stage is complete.
- Box includes 1 lb of rough gemstones in 9 varieties, a 4-stage grit set, ceramic pellets, a sifter and 2 drive belts (1 spare).
Limits to know
- One barrel only: each grit step has to finish before the next one can start.
- The 1 lb of included rough is about half of what a 3 lb barrel takes, so extra rough or media is needed for a full load.

Pick 3 · KoolStone
KoolStone C1 Pro brushless kit, 2.5 lb barrel
See price on AmazonA 2.5 lb rubber-barrel tumbler with a brushless motor and a 9-day timer with automatic shutoff. A fit for crafters who run short glass batches back to back.
What the listing offers
- Brushless motor, which the listing says is proven to last up to 20,000 hours.
- 2.5 lb rubber barrel, plus 3-speed controls and a 9-day timer with automatic shutoff and memory on a screen.
- Kit includes 1 lb of rough gemstones in 9 types, 2 belts, 4 grits and ceramic media.
Limits to know
- The grades of the 4 included grits are not named, so check that one is coarse 60/90 before a glass run.
- The rough gemstones and the polish step in the kit go unused for matte sea glass.

Pick 4 · AtoRock
AtoRock A1 brushless tumbler kit, 4 lb barrel
See price on AmazonA 4 lb rubber barrel on a metal base with a brushless motor: the largest barrel in this guide. For mosaic makers who need glass by the pound rather than by the handful.
What the listing offers
- 4 lb rubber barrel, the largest here, for bigger batches of glass per run.
- Three speed settings and a programmable 9-day timer with auto shut-off and a pause function.
- Brushless motor and a metal base, with a 1-year warranty stated in the listing.
Limits to know
- A 4 lb barrel has to be at least half full to tumble properly, so it is a poor match for a small handful of glass.
- The listing names 4 polishing grits without grades, and no cushioning media is listed in the box.

Pick 5 · Leegol Electric
Leegol Electric 3 lb rock tumbler, machine only
See price on AmazonA bare 3 lb tumbler with a timing belt and no rocks or grit in the box. Suits a crafter who already has glass and will buy coarse grit separately, so nothing in a kit goes unused.
What the listing offers
- 3 lb leak-proof barrel with a double stainless steel top cover.
- Driven by a timing belt, which the listing describes as more flexible and abrasion resistant than a normal belt.
- No rock kit in the box: it holds the tumbler, 0.5 lb of walnut shell media, one timing belt and instructions.
Limits to know
- No timer or speed settings are mentioned, so short glass runs have to be tracked by hand.
- No grit is included, the barrel material is not named in this listing, and a screwdriver is needed to open the lid.

Pick 6 · Dan&Darci
Dan&Darci Advanced rock tumbler kit, 1 lb barrel
See price on AmazonA 1 lb kit with a digital 9-day timer and 3 speed settings. The small barrel suits a handful of glass for jewelry or a trial batch, not bulk glass for mosaics.
What the listing offers
- 1 lb capacity barrel, described as low-noise and leak-resistant, sized for small batches.
- Digital 9-day timer with automatic shutoff and 3 speed settings, shown on LCD screens.
- Complete kit: 4 grit packets, 1/2 lb of assorted rough rocks, a mesh strainer, jewelry fasteners and a storage bag.
Limits to know
- 1 lb is the smallest barrel in this guide, so each run yields only a small amount of glass.
- Barrel material is not stated, and the kit is sold as a science toy for kids rather than a craft machine.
